This videomicrograph shows the Ciliate Didinium feeding on Halobacteria and Dinoflagellate cells, probably of the Dinoflagellate genus Dunaleilla. During the video we zoom in, beginning with 100x, then 200x, 400x, and 1000x Oil Immersion with Hoffman Modulation Contrast Optics. The sample was collected from a Hypersaline pond in the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, near the Alviso Ecology Center. No special effects were used in the individual clips or cuts between clips. Annotations are at the YouTube level. For Didinium, Halobacteria, and Dunaliella, search Wikipedia. The sample was originally viewed in the field, but in the laboratory was centrifuged briefly at 8000g and the pellets combined with one sample for about 3x concentration.
